The horse-drawn carriage ride ended on Thursday for a 64-year-old from Thalheim near Wels (Upper Austria) in hospital. The horses fled, threw the coachman off and collided with two cars.
The 64-year-old was riding in a carriage with two horses in Thalheim near Wels around 7:10 PM. When the man tried to turn the plow in a confined space, the carriage’s drawbar probably blocked and the carriage overturned as a result.
The horses became frightened and fled. The coachman’s 54-year-old wife, who was sitting next to him, jumped off and tried to grab the horse’s bridle, but couldn’t get to it. The team ran forward, the carriage tilted on two wheels and as the horses made a 90-degree turn, the man was thrown from the carriage and lost consciousness for several minutes.
Team damaged two cars
The coachman was injured to an unknown extent and was taken to the Wels Clinic after first aid. The pair of horses rushed off to the horse farm without a driver and collided with two cars, with at least one of the horses seriously injured in the rear.
