Vienna now has more than two million inhabitants. According to preliminary population monitoring data from the state statistics agency MA 23, the federal capital is likely to have crossed the symbolic limit by the end of September 2023. This was announced by the office of responsible municipal councilor Peter Hanke (SPÖ). By exceeding the norm, Vienna is the fifth largest city in the EU, after Berlin, Madrid, Rome and Paris.
In fact, this value is making a comeback: Vienna already had that many inhabitants at the beginning of the 20th century. The current population monitoring estimate assumes that Vienna’s population grew by more than 19,500 people between the beginning of the year and September 30. That would mean that the population at the beginning of October was just over two million. According to the town hall, more details will become clear in November when Statistics Austria announces the provisional population status as of October 1.
Fifth largest city in the European Union
MA 23 assumes that the value will be well above two million by the end of this year. It was said that Vienna’s population growth is traditionally strongest in September and October, when numerous students register to live in Vienna. Crossing the border, Vienna is the fifth largest city in the European Union, after Berlin, Madrid, Rome and Paris, and the second largest city in the German-speaking area.
The historic peak was reached in 1910 with 2.08 million inhabitants. Afterwards, the Danube Metropolis was for a long time seen as a shrinking and aging city.
Councilor Hanke emphasized that Vienna has now developed into an attractive, cosmopolitan center that guarantees a high quality of life, as international rankings have proven.
