they pollute their pantheon with spray

Date:

The city council has approved an institutional statement, from which EH Bildu has distanced itself, to condemn the attacks suffered by the monolith and the pantheon.

The family pantheon of the family of Fernando Buesa, murdered by ETA on February 22, 2000 together with his bodyguard Jorge Díez, located in the Santa Isabel de Vitoria cemetery, has been attacked with paint, after the sabotage committed on Thursday against the monolith built in his memory to both in the capital Alava.

This new attack comes hours after unknown persons also sprayed black spray paint on the monolith’s plaque that lists the names of Buesa and Díez and the date of their murder, which took place with the explosion of a car bomb.

The city council has approved one institutional statement, from which EH Bildu has broken away, to condemn both attacks, condemning the “unacceptable facts that reveal the lack of sensitivity towards the victims and the disregard for their memory”, while showing their “solidarity and support for the families of Fernando Buesa and Jorge Díez Elorza” . From EH Bildu, Rocio Vitero yesterday issued the “strongest rejection” of the attack on the monolith, adding that “these attitudes are completely misplaced.”

The deputy mayor of Vitoria, Beatriz Artolazabal (PNV), has expressed on social networks her “most absolute condemnation and solidarity” with the relatives of the socialist leader who was a victim of terrorism.

“New attack on the memory of Fernando Buesa. And that is no coincidence. This is not the path to coexistence,” he noted.

Three years ago, on July 9, 2020, they also sabotaged the gravestone of the socialist leader murdered by ETA by spraying it with red paint.

Last Thursday’s attack also drew condemnation from numerous political leaders.

The mayor of Vitoria, the socialist Maider Etxebarriarecalled that the memory of the victims and the right to truth, dignity and justice must be “kept alive”.

The General Secretary of the PSE-EE, Eneko Anduezasaid the “fanatics” who attacked the monolith “still do not understand that memory is the most important tool to build a just, peaceful, free society and democratic coexistence.”

The spokesperson of the PP in the Consistory, Ainhoa Domaicaalso expressed its “very absolute condemnation” of this fact, which “is yet another example of the intolerance that is still present in the Basque Country.”
