In Peru, a serious case of illegal wildlife trafficking has come to light at the airport. A man wanted to travel to Asia with 320 spiders under his sweatshirt, but was caught before he left.
During the security checkpoint, officials noticed that the 28-year-old’s stomach area was unusually bulging, the South American country’s National Forestry and Wildlife Authority said.
The man also carried 110 centipedes and nine tropical giant ants in plastic bags and small containers attached to his body. The smuggler, identified by authorities as Korean, was arrested.
Animals are meant as “Christmas presents”.
According to the Serfor authority, the seized animals are species from the Peruvian Amazon. The tarantulas are listed as an endangered species in Peru. Especially before Christmas, animals are more often smuggled and sold as pets or to collectors.
