After tank debacle – Putin fires one of his top generals

Date:

In Russia, one of the top generals has lost his job. President Vladimir Putin has dismissed Colonel General Rustam Muradov as commander of the Eastern Forces Group. This force was particularly notable for its unsuccessful attacks – dozens of tanks were lost near Wuhledar in eastern Ukraine. However, it could not stop with this dismissal of a senior military officer.

As reported by the British Ministry of Defence, this is the “highest Russian military discharge of 2023 to date, but there are likely to be more as Russia still falls short of its targets in Donbass.” Muradov’s forces were known for failed attacks, including one on the Ukrainian city of Wuhledar.

The Eastern Group of Forces suffered “exceeding casualties” due to “ill-conceived attacks” and repeated failures in taking Wuhledar. In Russia, the operations had “provoked strong public criticism”. Muradov’s own troops also denounced the practice in Wuhledar. In one notorious incident, dozens of Russian tanks were reportedly destroyed after orders were given to advance in “single file” due to a lack of demining equipment.

Muradov had gained experience as a military commander in Syria and the South Caucasus. As the Moscow Times reported, his resignation was confirmed by a source at the General Staff. It is not yet known who will succeed the general and whether he will be appointed to another military post.
