Government punished – Social Democrats win: Lithuania faces a change of power

Date:

Lithuania is facing a change of power. In the second round of the parliamentary elections, the Social Democrats became the strongest political force. The previously ruling conservative Fatherland Union of Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte was even partially expelled from parliament.

The Social Democrats are now aiming for a centre-left coalition with two other opposition parties. The ruling conservative Fatherland Union will be the second strongest force with 28 seats. Their two Liberal coalition partners also lost; one of them even lacked full access to parliament. After the results were announced, Fatherland Union leader Gabrielius Landsbergis admitted his party’s defeat and congratulated the Social Democrats.

“The Lithuanian people need a completely different government”
“I am very grateful to the Lithuanian people for voting so actively for us, the Social Democrats,” said party leader and former EU parliamentarian Vilija Blinkeviciute at the election party, where she was greeted with applause and cries of “Thank you!” . “The election results have shown that people in Lithuania, wherever they live – in big cities, small towns or villages – want change, they need a completely different government.”

The Ukraine policy will be maintained
A change of government would primarily lead to changes in domestic and social policies in Lithuania, which borders Russia’s Baltic Sea exclave of Kaliningrad and Moscow’s wartime ally Belarus. In foreign and security policy, the Baltic state is likely to remain firmly aligned with the EU and NATO and maintain its resolute support for Ukraine.
