Several associations, together with relatives of Lasa and Zabala, who were tortured in the same building, submitted the proposal to the General Assemblies of Gipuzkoa. Only the PP was against it.
Associations of victims of state violence, Aranzadi and relatives of Lasa and Zabala today presented a proposal for the La Cumbre Palace in San Sebastián to become a space for the memory of these victims.
The Democratic Memory Law of 2022 calls for the La Cumbre Palace to be left in the hands of the San Sebastián City Council, following an agreement reached by EH Bildu with the Spanish government.
The initiative has been generally well received, with exception of the Popular Party. For the PP, this is a project that marginalizes the victims of ETA.
The associations’ proposal includes that the palace will have a permanent exhibition on Lasa and Zabala, who were tortured in the building; a space for research; and a psychosocial care service for victims. The main goal, they explained, is that it becomes a place where victims of state violence can go truth, recognition and recovery.
The sisters of Joxean Lasa and Joxi Zabala have responded to PP member Jorge Mota that the project does not discriminate against anyone, and that just as the victims of ETA have a space in Vitoria, this could be complementary.
However, Aranzadi, the families of Lasa and Zabala, EH Bildu and Podemos have expressed their concern because the Municipal Council of San Sebastián and the Government of Spain have not yet signed the agreement to leave the La Cumbre Palace in municipal hands, despite what was agreed in 2022 by EH Bildu. PNV and PSE-EE have responded that they hope the transfer will take place in the short term.
