The state of Styria wants to be able to withdraw posthumously awarded awards in the future. A corresponding change in law is currently being assessed. Leading Nazi officials are primarily targeted.
If the assessment is successful, the change in law will be adopted at one of the upcoming sessions of the state parliament: on the initiative of Governor Christopher Drexler, the posthumous withdrawal of awards should be allowed – just like the withdrawal of a ring of honor. This also applies during his or her lifetime if the recipient (or of course the recipient) has committed a crime.
Mainly Nazis in the picture
However, the main purpose of the design is to withdraw the badge of honor of people who played a leading role in the NSDAP, the SS or the SA during the Nazi era. “Anyone who is guilty should not wear the country’s badge of honor,” Drexler emphasizes.
In the worst case, a historian must issue an opinion when it comes into effect. In the case of deceased persons, the revocation must then be published on the homepage of the state government office.
