After controversial statements during the American election campaign about ‘garbage’ and Puerto Rico, presidential candidate Donald Trump caused a stir with a campaign in a garbage truck. Trump spoke to reporters from the large vehicle in the battleground state of Wisconsin.
He was dressed in a garbage collector’s orange and yellow vest – in which he later appeared on stage at a campaign event.
Trump Supporters: Puerto Rico is a Floating Island Made of Trash
Biden showed what he and his Vice President Kamala Harris thought of millions of Americans. The controversy began on Sunday with a tasteless joke during a major Trump campaign event. One comedian described the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico as an island of trash floating in the ocean. The statement sparked outrage in Puerto Rico. This could be a problem for Trump, because approximately 500,000 Puerto Ricans live in the hotly contested and potentially decisive electoral state of Pennsylvania alone.
Biden also caused criticism with his statement
On Tuesday, Biden addressed the scandal in a phone call with the Latino community. He spoke positively about Puerto Ricans and criticized Trump. However, one of his lines in a video shared online could also be interpreted as follows: “The only trash I see doing there are his supporters.” or the popular views and statements about Latinos. The official White House transcript presents it as if the latter were true. Trump’s camp is spreading the other reading. The 81-year-old Biden often hesitates in his sentences.
Biden: “Trump’s demonization of Latinos is unconscionable”
Biden himself later emphasized that on the online platform “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I wanted to say.”
Harris, who is neck and neck with Trump just over a week before the presidential election, emphasized that she is against criticizing people for whom they vote. She wants to be president for all Americans – even those who don’t vote for her. Biden also clarified his statements.
Trump, for his part, has said in recent weeks that the United States has become a “dustbin for the world” due to an alleged “invasion” of criminal migrants from around the world. On Wednesday, Trump said in the city of Green Bay, Wisconsin, that Harris would allow 300 million immigrants into the country as president. The United States has a total population of approximately 337 million.
Switched from garbage truck to armored car
“What do you think of my garbage collection?” Trump asked reporters from the vehicle at the airport. After a few meters, he got into his armored car to drive to the election campaign event, as he later admitted.
