Following allegations of election fraud in Georgia, a number of votes were counted again: the ruling party’s victory has now been confirmed. In some polling stations, the results changed only slightly after the recount, the electoral commission said.
The recount in about twelve percent of polling stations and about 14 percent of the total votes resulted in “no significant change in the previously announced official result.” “The final counts changed only slightly in approximately nine percent of newly counted polling stations,” the commission said.
The opposition claimed the elections were ‘stolen’.
After counting almost all votes, the election commission declared the Moscow-friendly ruling party Georgian Dream the winner with 53.9 percent of the votes. The pro-Western opposition alliance was about 37.8 percent. The opposition accuses the government camp of ‘stealing’ their election victory.
The EU called for an investigation into the allegations
International observers also noted irregularities in the elections. The European Union called for an investigation into the allegations.
President does not respond to call
On Wednesday, the Georgian prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into suspected election fraud. President Salome Zurabishvili was said to have been “summoned” on Thursday to investigate allegations of an illegitimate victory by the ruling party. However, Zurabishvili does not want to comply with the subpoena.
