Everything is moving rather slowly – candy explorations enter the second round

Date:

The exploratory talks between the ÖVP and SPÖ will enter the second round on Tuesday afternoon. Not much more is known before the delegations meet at Palais Epstein. However, SPÖ boss Andreas Babler will meet with NEOS boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger on Monday.

Last weekend it was announced that a group of experts in the field of the budget had been formed. It was recently unclear whether the ÖVP team would remain unchanged after Constitutional Minister Karoline Edtstadler announced on Saturday that she would no longer want to be a member of the next government.

Edtstadler wants to “remain available”.
Edtstadler emphasized again on social media on Sunday that ÖVP Chairman Karl Nehammer would remain “fully available” for the exploratory team in the negotiations to form a new federal government. His office has not yet answered whether he will accept this offer. In the future, Edtstadler wants to fulfill her mandate in the National Council and establish a law firm in her home state of Salzburg. She passed the required bar exam.

In any case, in addition to Nehammer, the ÖVP scout team consists of club president August Wöginger, general secretary Christian Stocker, state secretary Claudia Plakolm and business association boss Harald Mahrer. There are also no signs of any change within the SPÖ. The team consists of the club’s general chairman Philip Kucher, women’s leader Eva Maria Holzleitner, ÖGB President Wolfgang Katzian, President of the Second National Council Doris Bures and party leader Andreas Babler.

Andreas Babler meets Beate Meinl-Riesinger
The latter became active on Monday. A meeting with NEOS chairman Beate Meinl-Reisinger was planned later in the afternoon. Their party is considered a likely third partner if the ÖVP and SPÖ find a way to work together. Meinl-Reisinger had already met Nehammer before the autumn holidays, as had Green Party spokesman Werner Kogler. He will also have a conversation with Babler during the week. The Greens are now seen as blatant outsiders when it comes to participating in government, but would likely be needed more often when it comes to two-thirds issues.

In any case, media information will follow after tomorrow’s exploration round. It is still unknown whether Nehammer and Babler will appear together before the press this time, unlike the first meeting.

FPÖ wants insight into the finances
However, the FPÖ considered it appropriate that not only the ÖVP and SPÖ, but also the Freedom Party, gain insight into the finances. A joint statement from MPs Hubert Fuchs, Barbara Kolm and Arnold Schiefer said this was the only way to prevent red-black from putting together another deceptive package just to look good.

Diakonie director Maria Katharina Moser also sent wishes to the explorers on Monday. Education, housing, health care, long-term care, combating child poverty, climate, integration of refugees and people with disabilities in the labor market are crucial future questions for the country: “I expect them from the parties that want to govern Austria in the coming years must be approached courageously and offensively.” This means investing in social security, because corresponding measures are investments in the future.
