German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock traveled to Ukraine and pledged support to the war-torn country (see video above). Your government recently expanded the so-called winter protection package with an additional EUR 200 million for emergency energy aid.
This is the response to the destroyed thermal power plants and power lines, Baerbock said in Kiev on Monday. The money will, for example, be used to provide fuel to houses at the front without an energy supply and to provide the population with blankets or warm winter coats ‘against the freezing temperatures’. Germany is “resolutely on the side of Ukraine”. “We will support the Ukrainians for as long as they need us, so they can follow their path to a just peace.”
Meeting with Zelensky and soldiers
Nearly a thousand days after the start of the war, the Green politician traveled to the country for the eighth time since February 2022. She met, among others, with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha and President Volodymyr Zelensky. During lunch, Baerbock visited a military Cheetah anti-aircraft position near the capital and spoke with soldiers there.
Two-thirds of the energy infrastructure has been destroyed
Your government has so far supplied 55 Gepard tanks with spare parts and 176,000 anti-aircraft tank ammunition from the Bundeswehr and industrial supplies to defend against Russian air attacks. Baerbock said Monday she had requested more air defense system equipment and ammunition. After the anti-aircraft position, she was shown an energy facility in the greater Kiev area. This has been hit several times by Russian missiles.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is now also requesting arms assistance from North Korea. He is bombing power plants and destroying power lines across the country, Baerbock said. Nearly two-thirds of the energy infrastructure has now been destroyed and there is no electricity and heat.
“Depending on each individual air defense system”
“We are leaving no stone unturned globally, it depends on each individual air defense system,” the minister assured. Putin wanted to finally separate Ukraine from Europe, but today the country is closer to the EU than ever. The reform path for EU accession is “courageous”.
Meanwhile, eastern Ukraine remains hotly contested. At least 13 people were injured in airstrikes on the city of Kharkiv and its suburbs, according to the rescue operation. A supermarket was hit.
