The US elections are causing mixed reactions among the Austrian parties: ÖVP and FPÖ reach out to Donald Trump. The NEOS want to further strengthen the EU’s foreign policy after Trump’s success. The SPÖ and the Greens are very concerned.
Donald Trump’s landslide victory also caused a stir at home. One of the first to congratulate was ÖVP Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who wants to “expand and strengthen” transatlantic relations with Trump. Above all, the Trump administration wants to ‘continue and intensify’ the fight against illegal migration and terrorism.
Kickl criticizes the ‘system’
Trump wishes Austrian election winner Herbert Kickl much strength, courage and energy for his coming term of office. When the FPÖ leader congratulated him via Facebook, he also approached Trump in his choice of words and spoke of a “defeat for the system including experts” and the “unified media”.
Neos boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger was more neutral in her tone and choice of words. “The citizens of the United States have decided. Clear and distinct,” explains the pink frontwoman. On the foreign policy front, it is also clear: “Russia is our problem, not the US’s.” Meanwhile, Andreas Babler, head of the SPÖ, reacted with concern. “As a result of Trump’s victory, the US is now threatened with an era of nationalism and attacks on civil liberties, on the rights of workers, women and minorities,” he said.
Green Party leader Werner Kogler is in the same vein: “Trump’s victory must be recognized, but it is not good news for transatlantic cooperation, global security and climate protection.”
