Styrian Governor Christopher Drexler has announced a reduction in bureaucracy and regulations for the period after the state elections. He wants to subject all 250 state laws to a ‘shake test’.
The current governing coalition of ÖVP and SPÖ will not really go down in state history because of its zeal for reforms. In contrast to the legendary ‘reform partnership’ of Franz Voves and Hermann Schützenhöfer, who merged municipalities and districts, Christopher Drexler (ÖVP) and Anton Lang (SPÖ) have so far shown little desire to change.
“Riddle test” for 250 Styrian laws
If the state’s governor has his way, that must change now. During the first session of the new state parliament in January 2025, the ÖVP wants to introduce a law that will put all other 250 state laws to the test.
Drexler calls the ‘shake test’ the check on the proportionality and necessity of all rules and regulations that make life difficult, especially for entrepreneurs. “It is about the greatest possible debureaucratization of administrative processes,” says the ÖVP boss, who plans to give the state laws an expiration date – that is, abolish them on December 31, 2027. Ultimately, only about 200 will remain from university professor Christoph Bezemek, who describes the move as “extremely brave”, even “radical”.
