At a special session on Friday, the Tyrolean state parliament decided to dissolve it, paving the way for snap elections on September 25. The coalition parties ÖVP and Greens, as well as the opposition parties SPÖ, FPÖ and NEOS voted in favor – only the Fritz list was against.
The dissolution decision was preceded by a running hour in which Platter, in what was probably his last major speech to the state parliament, warned of a “brutalization of political culture”. After his speech, he received a standing ovation from MPs – all except those of the FPÖ and List Fritz. The outgoing vice-governor Ingrid Felipe (Greens) also looked back on almost ten years of government work. The opposition parties used the debate to strike a chord with the election campaign.
First tug of war about the election date
Immediately after Platter’s withdrawal, announced last week, there was initially a tug-of-war between coalition partners Black and Green over the date. In the end, however, an agreement could be reached. Club officials Jakob Wolf (ÖVP) and Gebi Mair (Greens) announced at the press conference last week that they had agreed on the September 25 election date.
The People’s Party had been in favor from the beginning of September 25 as this is the earliest possible date according to the deadline.
A two-thirds majority was required
The Tyrolean state election regulations stipulate that in the event of an early termination of the five-year period, the state parliament must decide on self-dissolution three months before the elections. This deadline would have been exceeded in the regular July state parliament, so it was necessary to convene the special state parliament. The required two-thirds majority was already considered fixed because all parties – with the exception of the Fritz list – had expressed their support for this in advance.
