Johannes Steinhart is the new president of the Austrian Medical Association. The 67-year-old was chosen Friday as part of the Medical Association Days in Bad Radkersburg. Steinhart was the favorite in the race for office.
He is a member of the ÖVP-affiliated “Association of Austrian Physicians” and has been president of the Vienna Medical Association since May. Steinhart thus replaces his predecessor Thomas Szekeres.
Steinhart’s list, who often seems rather risqué when he represents the interests of doctors, became the group with the most votes in the parliamentary elections in Vienna in March. That was also the case in the last elections, but this time his opponent Szekeres, who was close to the SPÖ, failed to forge a coalition against him.
It is a rarity in the Medical Association for a new head of the regional chambers to also become president of the federal government. Michael Neumann was the last to do so in 1986.
In the election of the Vienna Medical Association on March 19, Steinhart became the party with the most votes – ahead of the Skezeres list. That was also the case in the last election, but then Szekeres managed to form a coalition against the relative majority of the Steinhart list as the second strongest force. This time, Steinhart, who is also head of the Curie for GPs, turned the tables.
