52 children were brought back from Austria to their minds at home from Ukraine from Austria. The supervisors who accompanied them are now preparing to go back to Austria without giving the children back.
It is a story that makes speechless: 52 Ukrainian orphans who found protection and peace in Austria for three years to a country drawn through the war. Pascale Vayer, initiator of the AID Organization Small Hearts, witnessed the return from close by. For a week she helped to free up the hotel in which the children were housed.
“You’re fine”
“I had to hang her photos around. I couldn’t stand to look into her eyes,” she says. Two containers, filled with special beds, toys, clothing and furniture, were transported to Ukraine with a truck. There are now 17 of the children, including a serious disabled, with foster families. The rest was housed again in an orphanage. The adoption procedures are underway, says Vayer. She learns from feedback: “You are doing well.” But how long?
While the children are left behind, their supervisors now want to return to Austria. This time without the children. As a displaced person to request asylum. Four supervisors already live with their own children in Neudau in East Styria and in the nearby Stinatz (Burgenland).
Recognized displaced status
From a legal point of view, this is possible: as a Ukrainian citizen with a recognized displaced status, you can free up within Europe and benefit from basic care services, the authorities confirm. Stay behind those who were not allowed to decide: the children. They are under the custody of Ukraine and had to return to the state instruction.
Especially explosive: the director of the orphanage of all people, who also wants to go back to Austria, would have made the return strong. This raises an urgent question: if parental children are sent back to war, which means for the approximately 80,000 other refugees who currently live in Austria?
The orphans could not submit applications, no protests. That is precisely the reason why their repatriation works as an irony of fate. Development also causes discussions in Ukraine. Some of the media criticize the return, others celebrate the action. According to Pascale Vayer, demonstrations are even planned to bring all children from Europe back. Despite war. Despite danger. “I understand that the supervisors want to come back,” says a supporter who took care of the children in Austria. “But if you want to be safe again, why did you give the children a voice?”
