On Kleiner Ödstein (Styria) a particularly tragic accident took place on Sunday: a 24-year-old climber fell about 100 meters and was fatally injured. Unfortunately, all help came too late for the young man.
The 24-year-old from the district of Melk in Lower Austria went on a climbing trip on the Kleiner Ödstein in Johnsbach on the “Rubber Killer” route together with a 19-year-old from Innsbruck. After reaching the summit of Klein Ödstein, the mountaineers rappel down the climbing route again. The 24-year-old fell about 100 meters over steep terrain shortly before 6 p.m. due to an operating error on the climbing device.
All help came too late
The emergency doctor of the requested emergency doctor helicopter Christophorus 14 was only able to determine the death of the climber. The body was later recovered by a police helicopter using a rope. Negligence on the part of third parties could not be established during the investigation and the body was released for burial by the Leoben public prosecutor’s office. The 19-year-old climber was also brought to safety by rescue helicopter Christophorus 14 by dew rescue.
