German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke by telephone with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Berlin on Friday, according to information obtained by Reuters from government circles. The conversation lasted an hour and was the first contact since December 2022, it was said.
The two politicians last spoke directly at the beginning of December 2022. The summer before, Scholz had been criticized for previous discussions. In June 2022, he defended himself by saying it was “absolutely necessary to talk to Putin.”
The conversation comes at a crucial time for Ukraine. The country is preparing for the third winter of war since the beginning of the Russian invasion. As in previous winters, Russia will likely focus mainly on its already badly damaged energy infrastructure.
In view of the rupture in the traffic light coalition in Germany, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock recently called for further German arms packages for Ukraine.
