The president of the Valencian Generalitat has not announced the names that will occupy these departments, nor has he indicated when he will undertake the renovation.
The President of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, has announced the creation of a new “Vice-Presidency for Economic and Social Recovery” and of a Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Interior to face the reconstruction after the DANA of October 29 last year and strengthen prevention against catastrophes.
Mazón launched these announcements at the end of the first speech of his appearance in Les Corts to report on the management of DANA, without revealing the names that will occupy these departments or specifying when he will complete the renovation of the Consell address.
According to what has been put forward, “a new government structure” will be created: “A new Consell for Recovery that was born with the clear and firm goal of ensuring that social and economic recovery reaches all corners of the Valencian Community. ”
It will, he explained, be a “dynamic, modern and efficient” structure, led by the new vice-presidency who will coordinate all departments in the reconstruction measures.
In addition, the new Ministry of Emergencies and Home Affairs – until now Justice and Home Affairs – will analyze risks and establish protocols that will range “from health emergencies to natural disasters,” along with increased citizen awareness.
Carlos Mazón, when he took over the position of President of the Generalitat Valenciana, took the decision to abolish the Office of the Commissioner for Flood Risk Management, a measure that has caused quite a bit of controversy, especially in the context of the recent DANA (isolated high-level Depression) that affected the Valencian Community.
This office was established by the previous Generalitat government, led by Ximo Puig of the Socialist Party. The aim was to coordinate the prevention and management of flood risks in a region particularly vulnerable to this type of meteorological phenomena, as is the case on the Valencian coast.
The agency was intended to develop strategies and plans to mitigate the effects of flooding, coordinate with various organizations and municipalities, and promote infrastructure that protects high-risk areas.
Carlos Mazón, of the Popular Party, justified the abolition of this office by claiming that it was an unnecessary body and that its functions could be taken over by other existing departments of the autonomous administration. According to Mazón, the decision was based on an austerity and efficiency plan to reduce what he considered “duplicate administrative structures”.
