Since Monday morning, around 29 million people have been able to choose their new parliament in Canada. Newfoundland in the east of the big country, which has zones six times, started. In surveys there was a narrow race between the prevailing liberals and the conservatives of the opposition.
For a long time the conservatives with top candidate Pierre Poilievre (45) were paramount, when the aggressive customs policy and the annexation beds of the US President Donald Trump provided a surprising admission to Prime Minister Mark Carney (60). Central topics in the election campaign were also the sharp rise in living, rising rents, access to affordable homes, health care and migration.
Both large parties strive for at least 172 seats, which corresponds to the absolute majority in parliament in Ottawa. A total of 343 seats are awarded. According to the majority of voting rights, the MPs are chosen directly in the constituencies. Smaller parties that compete are the Social -Democrats, the Greens and the Regional Party Block Québécois.
Result probably at night
The liberal party is currently ruling Canada with a minority government, until recently under the leadership of Justin Trudeau. Given weak economic data and rising prices, he announced his retreat at the start of the year and he submitted the party presidency and the office of Prime Minister of Carney. The last one then called new elections and therefore came up with an expected voice of no trust.
Originally the elections should have been held in the fall. The first results are expected on Tuesday evening (CEST). More than seven million Canadians have given their voice in advance.
