Fewer than Europeans: 140 Syrians and Afghans left voluntarily in 2023

Date:

Last year, 140 people left Afghanistan and Syria voluntarily. Overall, Europeans make up the majority of those deported, as is now evident from the answer to a parliamentary question by MP Hannes Amesbauer (FPÖ).

Last year, Slovakia topped the list of target countries (600), followed by Hungary, Romania, Poland and, the first non-EU country, Serbia. In terms of voluntary departures, Turkey topped the list in the first third of the year, with Serbia and Georgia in second and third place. 101 people chose the route to Syria, 39 went to Afghanistan.

Recently, the Constitutional Court declared that it is permissible to deport people back to Afghanistan. The argument: The situation under the Taliban regime has stabilized to a certain extent. The lives and integrity of the people in the country are no longer threatened by international or domestic conflicts. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) would also like to deport people to safe areas in Syria again.

High costs for shipping abroad
However, the deportations from the country come at a high cost: last year, 3.7 million euros were raised, of which 303,000 euros for the deportation of 22 people to Iraq and 60,600 euros for three people to Colombia and one to the Dominican Republic. Even within Europe, repatriation abroad is not cheap: 425,000 euros were needed for 58 people who were repatriated to Bulgaria.
