Tourism in the Ennstal – “Even Tyroleans are jealous of us now”

Date:

From arid mountain farms to successful tourist companies: no municipality in Styria is today as popular with guests as Schladming and is the clear leader in the field of overnight stays. But Ennstal’s success story also has its disadvantages.

Brief notes in the books of the Alpine Club show that the first ‘outsiders’ hiked in the Schladminger Tauern as early as the 1910s. It was mainly farmers who later opened their then barren farms to guests: “Our own people moved into small rooms in the summer so that the living areas were free for visitors,” says Helmut Schrempf about the beginnings of tourism in his home country. That was in the fifties.
