Jakes Abeberry, one of the leaders of Iparralde’s Abertzale movement, dies

He died in Biarritz at the age of 92. Among other things, he was the spokesman for Abertzaleen Batasuna, director of the magazine “Enbata” and leader of the dance group Oldarra.

He passed away at the age of 92. Jake’s Abeberryone of the referents of Iparralde’s abertzale movement, with a prolific career in politics and culture.

Born in Biarritz on April 25, 1930, he was the spokesman for Abertzaleen Batasuna, director of the magazine In robe and leader of the Oldarra dance troupe.

One of the founders of Enbata movement, Abeberry wrote editorials for half a century starting in 1968. All his life he worked for the recognition of the official language of the Basque language, the territoriality and unity of Euskal Herria.

Abeberry was a member of Euskal Batasuna and Abertzaleen Batasuna and for many years was part of the secretariat of the left-wing party Abertzale and also acted as spokesperson. He stood for election in 1968 and was elected to the House of the People of Biarritz from 1983 to 2014.

He was also president of the dance and choral society Biarritz Oldarra from 1955 to 1989 and created artistic initiatives such as “Bi Harriz Lau Xori” and “Le Temps d’Aimer la Danse”.
