After two winters without golf, the flu has now reached the country earlier than usual with great force. Since the beginning of this week, “a huge increase in the number of flu virus detections in clinical samples from all over Germany has been observed,” according to the MedUni Vienna.
Flu waves in our region usually don’t start until December or early January, peaking in February – but this year is different. According to MedUni’s Center for Virology on its website, an increase in flu activity has already been observed across Austria in recent weeks. However, since the start of the current week, there has been a huge increase. “This signals the beginning of the flu epidemic in Austria,” says MedUni Vienna.
Advice to get vaccinated
Influenza A viruses are currently circulating for the most part, the Center for Virology reports. These correspond to the virus strains that occur in flu vaccinations, which is why vaccination was recommended anyway.
Germany, Kazakhstan, Malta, Romania and Scotland are already reporting widespread flu virus activity, the MedUni explains. In France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Scotland, the positive rate in the samples sent exceeded ten percent. This corresponds to an epidemic circulation, so also a flu wave.
