Bengoetxea says he understands “the pain and anger” of the Cabacas family over the place given in Atalase

The first deputy lehendakari of the Basque government confirms that she does not know how the group of statues was created in tribute to the victims of the Bilbao City Council, which included the death of Iñigo Cabacas among the ‘insufficiently clarified cases’.

The First Vice President and Minister of Culture and Language Policy of the Basque Government, Ibone Bengoetxea, stated on Wednesday that understands “pain and anger” of the family of Iñigo Cabacas, after the inauguration in Bilbao of the Atalase statue complex in honor of the victims of terrorism and political violence, in which the name of the young man appears among the ‘insufficiently clarified cases’.

Bengoetxea, in an interview with Bizkaia Irratia, therefore referred to the fact that the family of Cabacas, the young man who died in 2012 as a result of a hit by the Ertzaintza, has asked the Bilbao City Council to rectify the place that was hit . awarded to him in the sculpture group. “I don’t know how that list came about, but I understand the pain and anger of some parents, because it is not easy at all to lose a child in those circumstances. I always try to be careful about the pain, because I know pain, and sometimes words can cause more pain,” he said.

The First Deputy Lehendakari has emphasized that the critical memory “is necessary”and that to do this “it is necessary to know what happened, where we come from and where each of us was, because this is a challenge for society, but also for each of us.”

“It is up to us to build that memory, to restore the memory of the victims and the pain inflicted on their families, and this sculpture represents the recognition we owe to all victims and is an offer we make to our next generations,” he assured.

Questioned about this issue by Euskadi Irratia, the Secretary General of the Basque Socialists, Eneko Anduezahas indicated that the PSE-EE is “willing to analyze” what happened, because if “there is pain and it can be repaired, it should be done”. He emphasized that he does not “distinguish between victims” and will always advocate for justice and recovery.
