NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met US President-elect Donald Trump in the US. The conversation on Friday in Palm Beach, Florida, focused on “global security issues.”
Rutte is determined to further support Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s war of aggression, NATO spokeswoman Farah Dakhlallah said in a short statement in Brussels on Saturday.
Trump, who takes office on January 20, is negative about the billions in aid to Kiev. The Republican says he wants to quickly end the war in Ukraine, which could entail territorial concessions to Russia at Ukraine’s expense.
Trump’s new old threatening background
During Trump’s first term as US president, US relations with NATO were tense. Trump accused NATO partners of investing too little in defense. In the spring, Trump reiterated during the election campaign that he would not come to the aid of failing NATO partners if they were attacked. In fact, he would even encourage the Russians to “do whatever they want to them.”
Rutte took over as NATO Secretary General in October. During his time as Prime Minister of the Netherlands, he was nicknamed the ‘Trump Whisperer’ because he managed to appease the then American president.
