South Korean police are now investigating President Yoon Suk-yeol for treason (see video above). She responded to complaints filed by an opposition party and activists. The background is the temporary imposition of martial law.
As reported, the South Korean president unexpectedly imposed martial law late Tuesday evening (local time) and lifted it a few hours later after massive political resistance. Martial law was declared in the country for the first time since the late 1980s.
Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun is said to have advised this. The president justified his actions by accusing the opposition of being the accomplice of the communist north and having taken the parliamentary process hostage. After martial law was declared, protests followed, including from his own party.
Replaced Minister of Defense
Now the defense minister, who would have been responsible for sending troops through parliament, has resigned. The previous ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Choi Byung-hyuk, was appointed as his successor. Many people in South Korea are currently calling for the president to resign. The ruling People Power Party (PPP) wants to keep him in office despite declaring martial law.
The opposition has already submitted a motion for impeachment, which will be voted on in parliament on Saturday. She accuses Yoon of violating the constitution. The Democratic Party, South Korea’s main opposition party, has a majority in parliament but needs the support of at least eight PPP lawmakers. A two-thirds majority is required to depose the head of state.
