The second round of recognition regarding the Pasaia ambush ends without any identification

Date:

The only survivor of the massacre, Joseba Merino, has not been able to identify any of the police officers involved, as happened in the first lineup. Three police officers were summoned, but apparently only one has appeared, as the other two have died.

The second investigation held this Thursday in the court of San Sebastián to try to clarify the murder of four members of the autonomous anti-capitalist commandos in the port of Pasaia by the national police in 1984 has been closed without any identification.

This series of recognitions thus joins three others that took place on March 28 in the same court where the sole survivor of the massacre, Joseba Merino, was also unable to identify any of the police officers allegedly involved.

At the end of this procedure, the lawyer of the families, Santiago Gonzalezexplained to journalists that it is “difficult” to obtain a positive identification “after so many years have passed”, for which, according to what he revealed, he will soon ask for “a photographic recognition” of the officers with ” licensed photos” and “official images from the time” because he says it’s something that “could make a little more sense”.

González has revealed that in addition to the wheel of recognition that will be held today, two more would take place, which ultimately did not take place because the police officers who were supposed to participate in it have died, something that the lawyer of the victims’ families will ask for official recognition because no “death certificates” were provided.

For his part, Joseba Merinohas confirmed that “this is not over yet” because “other proceedings are still ongoing”.

During the recognition parade held this Thursday, several dozen people remained outside the San Sebastián Palace of Justice behind banners with the slogans in Basque: “Investigate and clarify the Pasaia massacre” and “Pasaia in memory”.
