Despite the recent escalation of the war in Ukraine, the US and Russia are still talking through military channels. Moscow confirmed reports in the US media about a telephone conversation between top generals.
Moscow’s Chief of the General Staff Valeri Gerasimov and his American counterpart Charles Brown held a discussion on the Russian initiative on November 27 on the exercises of the Navy and missile forces, the Ministry of Defense in Moscow said. Gerasimov was briefed on practical fire exercises and the launch of high-precision missiles in the eastern part of the Mediterranean.
“This information was provided to prevent possible incidents related to the presence of US and NATO ships near the Russian training area,” the ministry said. Moscow thus indirectly confirmed reports from American media that had previously reported on the telephone conversation.
Due to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, for which Moscow also blames Washington, high-level contact between the two nuclear powers is now rare. Russian Defense Minister Andrei Beloussov and his American counterpart Lloyd Austin last spoke on the phone in July.
Discussion also about the war in Ukraine
According to the New York Times, the generals also discussed the war in Ukraine and global and regional security issues. Accordingly, Gerasimov informed his colleague about the launch of Russia’s new Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile, which was first used against Ukraine in November. Gerasimov said this in response to the US allowing Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles against Russian territory.
