After the departure of Secretary-General Dieter Kandlhofer, two of the most important positions of the Ministry of Defense were filled: Kandlhofer’s successor will be Arnold Kammel, Director-General for Defense Policy and the Minister’s private secretary. Roman Markhart, who recently worked with Karl Nehammer, will take over from Kammel’s former job as private secretary.
The new Secretary-General Arnold Kammel is no stranger to those familiar with the Ministry of Defence: the internationally renowned security policy expert has been active in researching international relations and European policy since the early 2000s. In 2018, he first appeared in the Federal Chancellery as an advisor to the Federal Minister for the EU, Art, Culture and Media.
Since June 2019, Kammel has been Chief of Staff at the Ministry of Defence. Most recently, he accompanied and represented Secretary of State Klaudia Tanner on her trip to the US, where a sensational deal was reached with the Vermont National Guard.
Markhart as new private secretary
Kammel will no longer be able to do this work in the future, Roman Markhart will take over his position. The Business Administration graduate had previously worked in the Ministry of Defense as Deputy Chief of Staff and Spokesperson for the Minister, most recently assumed the role of GECKO Chief of Staff and worked in Karl Nehammer’s cabinet. Within the ÖVP, he is considered friendly and loyal to his bosses, but consistent when it comes to carrying out interests.
“Perfect time to say goodbye”
Outgoing Secretary-General Kandlhofer thanked “Klaudia Tanner, Austria’s first defense minister” and saw the “perfect time to say goodbye”. According to insiders from BMLV, this farewell has been planned for a long time and has nothing to do with the allegations about Klagenfurt airport.
