The candy coalition now wants to ask the population about the large chunks

Date:

ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS now want to commit themselves to ‘governing with the people’: referenda are being considered for certain controversial issues, as the ‘Krone’ has learned.

The government negotiations are in the final phase. However, the biggest chunks, such as the introduction of wealth taxes, are still controversial. The three parties agree on points such as the introduction of a second compulsory year of kindergarten or the imposition of an energy company tax – as the “Krone” has already revealed.

“Government with the people”
The plan is new under the title “Government with the people”; referendums are specifically planned. If no agreement is reached on key points in the negotiations, the candy coalition must not collapse, but the electorate must decide for itself.

That is no coincidence: the actual election winner, the FPÖ, has been calling for more direct democracy for years. In the summer, the “Krone” called for more attention to the opinions of the majority of citizens on the most pressing issues in the country in the nonpartisan initiative “Voice of Austria”.

School, taxes, ORF
This is exactly what needs to be negotiated now; controversial issues such as the introduction of comprehensive schools, an ORF reform or new wealth taxes; a referendum must and can provide clarity if necessary.

There are opponents of such popular decisions within the three parties; NEOS and ÖVP-Economy in particular are sceptical. They agree that, contrary to Kickl’s opinion, fundamental and minority rights should not be voted on.
