On Tuesday, the State Government of Vorarlberg presented the invoice for the State of Vorarlberg for 2024 – before 2025 the new loan could be recovered. It is around 200 million euros.
Known and still painful: Vorarlberg has to save. This was confirmed on Tuesday Governor Markus Wallner (ÖVP) and the Governor Christof Bitschi (FPö) at the State when presenting the invoice for the past year. The sobering summary of Wallner was as expected. Another recession year, which was determined by a tense situation on the labor market, higher costs and lower income: “A sharp wind blew towards us,” said the governor. The crisis runners had left clear traces in the budget. Because the view of overall economic development does not look too rosy, the consolidation course still has to be followed.
2.4 billion budget volume in total
Vorarlberg completed the year 2024 with a minus in the financing budget of EUR 242.9 million. Due to the resolution of the reserves, the shortage of the profit budget was 148.5 million euros. The budget volume was good for 2.4 billion euros in the financing budget. More than 70 percent of funds flowed in the field of education, social affairs and health, as well as housing subsidies.
In the latter there was an unexpectedly high increase in expenditure, which is compensated by a decrease in income. In this context, Wallner said that “adjustments” should take place in this segment. However, the governor did not want to comment on the type of adjustment.
Wallner described the investments to be active on Tuesday, as described considerably on Tuesday to initiate the economy. In 2024, 92.5 million euros were invested – “almost as high as in previous years,” he said.
New loan in the current year?
The debt level was reduced by a million to 449.9 million euros in 2024 – but it could look different in the coming year. Wallner confirmed that the inclusion of a new loan of around 200 million euros could be needed – even if one tried to avoid this. There are still 95 million euros on reserves. It is also not yet clear whether and to what extent these funds are used.
