As tens of thousands of demonstrators called for the ouster of President Yoon Suk Yeol, South Korea’s parliament voted to depose the head of state on Saturday.
An opposition motion received the required two-thirds majority in the National Assembly. 204 of the 300 parliamentarians voted for impeachment. An initial application failed last Saturday after an almost complete boycott by the ruling party.
The final decision lies with the Constitutional Court
Prime Minister Han Duck Soo will now take over presidential duties on an interim basis before the Constitutional Court makes the final decision. It could confirm Yoon’s impeachment or declare it unconstitutional.
The opposition accuses Yoon of violating the constitution. He unexpectedly declared martial law last Tuesday and lifted it again hours later after massive resistance.
On Thursday, Yoon defended his decision during a short television speech. The president said he had declared martial law to protect the nation. His political opponents are ‘anti-state forces’ who would paralyze government work and disrupt the country’s constitutional order.
