Peacekeeping Force Ukraine – expert: At least 150,000 soldiers needed

Date:

According to media reports, confidential discussions have been going on for weeks between representatives of several NATO countries about how a possible ceasefire in Ukraine could be monitored. According to Colonel Markus Reisner of the Federal Army, such a situation could only be guaranteed with a robust peacekeeping force.

Because according to him a pure observer mission will not be enough, soldiers must also be armed to ensure peace, Reisner tells “Welt am Sonntag”. “In my opinion, at least 100,000 to 150,000 soldiers would be needed to successfully ensure peace in Ukraine.”

The number could be reduced again later. But especially at the start of the mission, “complex logistics are necessary, such as carefully executed mine clearance along the front line.” In addition, the chance of ceasefire violations is significantly greater, the army expert said.

What troops Putin would like to have
“The largest European countries, Germany, France, Great Britain and Italy, should be able to provide no more than 25,000 to 50,000 soldiers for the initial deployment,” the internationally recognized expert said. A few thousand more people from other EU countries would then join. Moreover, Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin will have an interest “in ensuring that as many countries as possible from the so-called Global South are present, that is, from countries such as India and Bangladesh, but also from the African continent.”

Trump recently received praise from Moscow for an interview with ‘Time’ magazine. In it, the US president-elect described it as insane that Ukraine used US-supplied missiles to carry out attacks deep into Russian territory. “I strongly oppose sending missiles hundreds of miles to Russia,” Trump said. “Why are we doing this? We are only escalating this war and making it worse. “We should not have allowed that,” said the 78-year-old.

Praise for Trump from Moscow
In doing so, he once again indicated in a particularly clear manner that he will probably take a different course in American Ukraine policy than outgoing President Joe Biden. In November, he authorized Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles against targets in Russia. Moscow then warned of the outbreak of a new world war.

“We like that. “It is clear that Trump understands exactly what is escalating the situation,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Trump’s statements were fully consistent with Moscow’s position, Moscow said.
