The former board member of the state holding company ÖBAG, Thomas Schmid, is now an official key witness in the so-called Casag proceedings. Schmid has paid the fine of 60,000 euros imposed on him and partial compensation of 200,000 euros.
Therefore, the Public Prosecution Service for Economic and Corruption (WKStA) has stopped proceedings against Schmid “subject to subsequent prosecution”, a WKStA spokesperson said on Thursday.
Condition for leniency status
The payment was a condition for obtaining clemency status, and Schmid must also continue to contribute to the investigation. Schmid’s status as a key witness was announced in November and he now meets the formal requirements for this.
The former Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance has made an extensive confession to the WKStA in several interviews. Prominent representatives of the ÖVP – including ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz – were severely accused in several cases.
