The Polish government has passed a bill temporarily restricting the right to asylum. The reason given is the influx of migrants from neighboring Belarus. With the measure, Poland wants to “take back control of its borders”.
Donald Tusk’s government bill stipulates that the right to apply for asylum in Poland can be limited for a period of up to 60 days. The government should specify to which part of the border this should apply. With the approval of parliament, the scheme can be extended for a further 60 days.
The EU accuses Russia and ally Belarus of deliberately abandoning migrants at the borders of northern and eastern Europe as part of ‘hybrid’ attacks. The European Commission said a week ago that member states bordering Russia and Belarus may restrict the right to asylum if Moscow and Minsk use migrants as a “weapon”.
Poland in particular had demanded action from Brussels due to significantly increased migration numbers. The bill still needs to be approved by parliament. However, the Left, a junior partner in Tusk’s government, has expressed reservations about the measure.
