Hungary is in talks with Russia and Ukraine about continuing gas supplies via Ukraine. Although these are now sent to Hungary via the Turkstream pipeline, the country does not want to give up the transport route via Ukraine, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Saturday.
Slovakia and industry associations from Austria are also campaigning to continue imports via Ukraine.
Transit contract expires
The gas pipeline through Ukraine is one of the last major transport routes for Russian natural gas to Europe. Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Austria in particular still obtain a large part of their natural gas via this route. But the transit contract between Russia and Ukraine expires at the end of this year. Ukraine has stated several times that it does not want to renew this contract due to the war between the two countries.
“We are now trying a trick… what if the gas, before it reaches the territory of Ukraine, is no longer Russian, but is already in the possession of the buyers,” Orbán said. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico also made a similar proposal.
