Since Donald Trump’s election victory, his future minister, the tech billionaire Elon Musk, has hardly left his side. And he is already involved in so many issues that observers suspect he is a kind of shadow president. The president-elect is now disputing such rumors.
“No, he is not taking over the presidency,” the Republican said at the right-wing conservative conference ‘AmericaFest’ in the state of Arizona. “But Elon did a great job. Isn’t it nice to have smart people we can rely on?”
Musk should actually save money
According to Forbes, Musk is the richest man in the world. He also owns Platform X, on which he promotes Trump. He also provided enormous financial support to the Republican election campaign. He has been close to the 78-year-old since his election victory.
Trump has appointed the businessman to work with entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy in a newly created committee called DOGE (“Department of Government Efficiency”) to develop proposals to cut government spending.
Influencing budget negotiations
Musk was criticized last week for, among other things, his role in the budget negotiations. The US Congress was only able to prevent a government shutdown at the last minute after Trump – probably under the influence of Musk – torpedoed an agreement that had already been negotiated.
Democrats in particular accuse Musk of interfering in political processes without a political mandate and with his own economic interests. Some members of Congress mocked the fact that Musk was the real Republican leader, ironically calling him “President Musk.”
Trump: “Do you know why that can’t be him?”
Trump strongly opposed this in Arizona, but did not immediately deny the accusations of political influence behind the scenes. Instead, he declared, “No, he won’t be president, I can promise you that. (…) And do you know why that can’t be him? He was not born in this country.”
Musk has American citizenship, but is from South Africa. Under the U.S. Constitution, he is barred from holding the office of president.
