Chancellor Karl Nehammer expects an agreement on a new government in January. “Things are going well,” he said on Tuesday in the ORF program “Licht ins Dunkel” about the coalition negotiations.
First of all, there are many “detailed challenges” to be overcome and there is a budget of 250 billion euros. The negotiations will now continue intensively after the holidays. “I assume we will do it in a good time frame in January.”
Rising expectations
Of course you feel the rising expectations, the Chancellor said. He understands that there is great concern that the challenges ahead will be addressed. This increases the pressure – but it is also his job to deal with this pressure.
Now it is about conducting the negotiations “properly and fairly”. “Everything that is now being discussed, debated and sometimes fought for is good for the government, because the government then works and does not block itself.”
Negotiations on public holidays continue
According to reports, negotiations between the ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS will continue during the Christmas holidays – initially more informally at employee level. The technical budget group will meet on Friday, but probably without party leaders. These should meet again by Monday at the latest. However, this can also be done earlier, possibly on Friday or Saturday.
