Against the backdrop of future US President Donald Trump’s plans for mass deportations, Mexico is planning an emergency app for its citizens in the neighboring country. Mexicans about to be arrested by US authorities will be able to use an emergency mechanism to notify the nearest consulate, Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente said on Friday.
The family of the person concerned and the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs would also be informed.
According to de la Fuente, the mobile phone app should be ready for use in January. Trump will take office as president on January 20. The Republican had made illegal migration one of his key campaign issues and promised to carry out a mass deportation with the help of the US military.
About 4 million Mexican migrants are in the US illegally
According to estimates by the American opinion research institute Pew Research Center, approximately four million Mexican migrants were living in the US in 2022 without a valid residence permit.
Mexico, together with other important countries of origin, is preparing for the American migration policy under Trump, as De la Fuente further announced. His government is in talks with Honduras and Guatemala about their respective contingency plans in case of mass deportations. A meeting at ministerial level on this topic is planned.
