Former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant is retiring from politics. He now announced this on television. Gallant was dismissed from the government by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in November.
The two have had disagreements for months over how to conduct the war against the radical Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Gallant initially retained his seat as an elected member of the Knesset. This refers to the Israeli parliament, which has 120 members.
Gallant previously served as commander of the Israeli Army’s Southern Command, Minister of Construction, Minister of Immigration and Education, among other positions. The politician also had decades of experience in the military. He joined the Israeli army in 1977, joined the army two years later and was promoted to major general in 2022. Gallant has been in charge of the Gaza Strip since 2005.
Arrest warrant against politicians
After Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel, he said: “We are fighting human animals and we are acting accordingly.” In November, the Criminal Court in The Hague issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant. Gallant is accused of war crimes such as starvation as a method of war and refusing humanitarian aid.
