US President-elect Donald Trump has spoken out against wind turbines in the North Sea and has criticized Britain in this context. “Britain is making a very big mistake. Opens the North Sea. Away with the wind turbines,” he wrote on his online platform ‘Truth Social’ on Friday.
The background is apparently Britain’s climate policy, which has been increasingly relying on offshore wind in the North Sea for years. From about the 1970s, large-scale oil and gas production took place in the North Sea, mainly in Great Britain and Norway. But oil companies have been gradually withdrawing for twenty years. The main reason is a lack of reserves under the North Sea.
London relies on alternative energies
Britain is also relying on alternative energies and recently increased taxes on oil producers in its waters. With his contribution, Trump responded to an announcement by the American oil and gas company APA, which, according to a media report, wants to completely withdraw from the North Sea by 2029. In 2025, production there is expected to drop by 20 percent compared to 2024. The American oil multinational Exxon had already completely withdrawn from the region in 2024.
Trump doubts climate change, supports fossil fuels and initiated the US withdrawal from the global climate treaty during his first term. His successor Joe Biden has reversed his withdrawal from the Paris Agreement to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. Trump now wants to cancel it again.
