The NEOS, which withdrew from the coalition negotiations with the ÖVP and SPÖ on Friday, has shown a cautious upward trend in recent years. Their best national result was achieved at the EU elections in June 2024 with 10.14 percent.
The top candidate was Helmut Brandstätter. The National Council elections in September 2024 also set a new record for House of Representatives elections with 9.1 percent and fourth place ahead of the Greens. However, it was not enough for the government in the negotiations.
Most recently, in the Styrian state elections on November 24, the NEOS was the only party to achieve a plus besides the Blues, who made huge gains. There was also a small gain of 0.42 percentage points at the state elections in Vorarlberg.
Failures in Carinthia and Salzburg
While the results in the state elections in Upper Austria, Tyrol and Lower Austria in 2021, 2022 and 2023 yielded only a small plus, the party missed the necessary five percent threshold to enter parliament in the state elections in Carinthia. Things got even worse in the subsequent elections in Salzburg in April 2023. The Pinks were expelled from the state government and state parliament with a loss of 3.07 percentage points.
The municipal elections in the cities of Salzburg and Innsbruck brought similar disappointments this year.
As reported, NEOS broke off negotiations on the “sugar coalition” on Friday. One of the arguments cited was the lack of reforms, for example in the areas of financing health care and the pension system. The Austrian government will have to make cuts, it was said. The parties should think beyond the next election day.
