As the Ministry of the Interior in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, has announced, the five-storey building in the city of Al-Kut was only open a week before the accident.
Most victims, including children, stinked when they were caught by the flames. According to the authorities, 45 people can be saved from the building by rescue workers.
Al-Kut is approximately 170 kilometers southeast of Baghdad in the province of Al-Wasit. A three -day funeral period was declared there. The cause of the fire that was switched off at night was initially unclear.
Minister of the Interior Abdul Amir al-Schammari ordered a committee of inquiry. The those responsible would be held responsible, he announced in a message from the ministry. People on the spot blamed poor security standards for the rapid spread of fire in local media.
