Domestic political blow on Saturday evening: Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) announced his resignation as chancellor and ÖVP leader after coalition negotiations with the SPÖ broke down. What happens next politically? With the live ticker from krone.at you won’t miss anything!
What happens next is still completely unclear. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen was informed on Saturday and he wants to take further steps on Sunday.
- In addition to new elections, a coalition could possibly be formed between the FPÖ and the ÖVP.
- Van der Bellen is under pressure for Herbert Kickl. The FPÖ leader described the personnel decision within the ÖVP on succession as an “acid test”.
-
NEOS boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger sees her own perception confirmed: “Unfortunately, the ÖVP and SPÖ are not able to overcome their mutual injuries and develop a common image for this country.”
- Viennese mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) was disappointed with the ÖVP. He believes that the People’s Party will now make the stirrup holder for Kickl.
Van der Bellen had personally given Nehammer the task of forming a government and not FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl as chairman of the party with the highest votes in the National Council elections. Van der Bellen justified this by saying that both the People’s Party and the Social Democrats did not want to form a coalition with the PVV.
