Rallies in Vienna – students and NGOs protest against Kickl

Date:

On Monday at 11 a.m., FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl will talk to Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen. He could order him to form a government. The Jewish-Austrian students have now announced a spontaneous protest meeting.

“We call on all democratic forces to send a strong signal against the planned right-wing government and to join our spontaneous protest,” they wrote on Platform X on Sunday evening. The meeting was announced for 10:30 am on Monday at Ballhausplatz .

Not the only protest
This action will not be the only one against the FPÖ leader. The NGOs Greenpeace, Volkshilfe and SOS Mitmensch also called on Sunday evening for a “demonstration against a right-wing extremist chancellor”. This will be on Thursday, January 9 at 6:00 PM – also at Ballhausplatz in Vienna.

You can see the message about Monday’s protest meeting here.

“Our republic is at a crossroads. There is a threat from a right-wing extremist Chancellor and with him an attack on democracy, human rights, justice, independent media and social cohesion in our country,” it said in a broadcast. Together we must send a signal “that we want to protect our republic”.

The human rights organization SOS Mitmensch cited previous statements by the ÖVP on the grounds that Herbert Kickl was unfit to govern (Nehammer) and that he was frightening as Chancellor (Edtstadler). “Are you still doing well, People’s Party?” asked spokesman Alexander Pollak, who noticed that the FPÖ leader was kneeling. Nehammer was sent into the desert.

Net: “You can go to Israel”
The first reactions online are negative, especially to the announcement by the Jewish-Austrian students. “Kickl is coming. If you don’t like it, you can go to Israel,” wrote an X user, for example. They should instead take action against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, it has been suggested elsewhere.

You can read ‘bad hate speech what you are doing here’ and ‘very anti-democratic’. Pollak received relatively more approval for his post. The ÖVP had become ‘hypocritical’, ‘wrong’ and unelectable, it was noted. Others think that Nehammer would have belonged in the desert anyway and that Pollak probably would not have slept well.
