When it comes to immigration, future US President Donald Trump is determined to implement a rigorous deportation policy. During the election campaign, he announced that if re-elected he would order the largest mass deportation of undocumented immigrants in American history. However, an initial tightening of immigration laws could be passed by parliament before Trump is sworn in – with the help of Democrats.
On Tuesday, the so-called Laken-Riley Act – named after a 22-year-old nursing student who was murdered by an illegal Venezuelan immigrant while jogging on her campus in the US state of Georgia – was passed by the House of Representatives. Among the 264 yes votes, there were also 48 Democratic votes, news channel CNN reported. The law provides for the imprisonment of criminals residing illegally in the country, even for minor crimes such as burglary or theft.
The plan could still fail in the Senate
The project must now be passed by the Senate. However, it could still fail due to Republicans’ fairly narrow majorities in both chambers of Parliament. In the Senate, the bill would have to exceed the 60-vote threshold, so with 53 Republican senators you also have to rely on at least seven Democrats.
There was sympathy in advance for the Republican plans from the ranks of senators from President Joe Biden’s party. Pennsylvania Rep. John Fetterman said he supports any expansion of government authority to prevent tragedies like Laken Riley’s.
