The Taliban in Afghanistan has established strict rules for the population. Now even the beard length and the hairstyle of men are checked. The moral police even arrested men exactly, as the UN mission Unama reports.
Men must have a certain beard length according to the rules of the Taliban and there are hairstyles that are not allowed. In the first six months after the Virtue Act was in force, more than half of the random arrests concerned the appearance of men. The set rules were introduced in August 2024 on the command of the Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada.
Still stricter rules for women
Among other things, the Virtue Act stipulates that women have to cover their entire body, including face and not allowed to travel without male guidance. The measures are part of an extensive progress to enforce the Taliban interpretation of Sharia legislation.
3300 inspectors for virtue law
According to Unama, there are now around 3,300 male “inspectors” in use in 28 of the 34 provinces, including 540 alone in the Kabul capital province. Only a few women are working as a controller as part of the Virtue Act, Unama is said. The inspectors have far -reaching forces, can hold people up to three days and destroy properties such as musical instruments.
Taliban government not internationally recognized
Until now, no state has recognized the Taliban government worldwide. The Islamists are largely internationally isolated for their violations of human rights, especially to women. Although they had promised even more moderate government when they took over power in August 2021, their rule has become a solid authoritarian system.
