In the Upper Bavarian Pfaffenhofen on the ILM, two people are infected with the rare Bornavirus. One of them recently died of the infection, the district office said Monday.
The second person is in medical treatment. The local health department is “intensively engaged in the clarification of a possible way of infection by the two persons affected” and is in close contact with the responsible state office.
Authorities: Avoid contact with mice
According to the authorities, the virus reservoir is the Feldspitzmaus. For example, infected mice divide the virus through stools, urine and saliva without getting sick. According to the current state of research, transfer to people can be made by contact with infected animals or their excretion. However, the exact transmission route is not known. The authorities have recommended to avoid contact with the mice and their excretion.
According to the Friedrich Loeffler Institute that is responsible for animal health, the virus occurs in large parts of Bavaria in Feldspitzmäusen. Since the introduction of the reporting obligation on 1 March 2020, the Robert Koch Institute has been sent to seven acute infectious a matters per report in Germany. A total of 55 infections have been registered throughout Germany. The virus was only identified as the cause of serious brain inflammation in people in 2018.
